賽門(Simon)一向在圖像創意方面有傑出的表現,升學考試時也順利考上了自己第一志願的美術班,但到了「語文」的領域就不是他擅長的了,不但如此,他說話還有點「口吃」的情況。有一次他回多智能看老師,跟我提到了他的苦惱,他全民英檢考過了聽力及閱讀的初試,但到了考口說及寫作的複試,就遇到了瓶頸。為了幫助他通過考試,於是我們約好以一對一的家教方式進行了兩個月的訓練,接下了請託,我也開始苦惱,要怎麼幫助孩子突破障礙呢?
這時手上原有的教材未必完全適用,後來我想到了學習的「優勢管道」,既然賽門在圖像思維上佔有優勢,何不好好運用這方面的能力,於是在「唸讀」項目,我試著引導他以句子分段的視覺方式帶動唸讀,並藉由反覆地練習將句子的唸讀順暢化,而在「問題回答」項目,建議他想像問題的情境圖像,並要求在練習時,將回答寫下來(具象化),之後檢查文法提高正確度,至於寫作部分,孩子觀察圖片來掌握寫作線索是容易的,接下來只要引導他將寫作結構和畫面圖像結合,寫出符合要求的文章就行了,當然還是得歷經寫作練習與批改修正的過程,兩個月後賽門通過了英檢考試,雖然這是為了考試所做的短期特訓,但對賽門和我而言,運用「優勢管道」來學習是一項正向的成長經驗。
身為教育工作者,每每遇到教學瓶頸時,會問自己有多相信多元智慧論的理念,並提醒自己是不是有掌握到孩子的「優勢管道」來設計課程,誠如迦納博士所說,每個人都具備不同形式的智慧,這些天賦潛能是否被看到且得到充分發展並運用到學習上,是一個重要的關鍵。譬如我們單以「語文」天賦來看待並篩選孩子,那麼有絕大多數的孩子是在正常範圍 (normal interval),表現突出的會落在少數,但是隨著教學經驗的增加,我發現事實並非僅只於此,優勢管道是可以帶動其他領域的學習,達到優秀的水準,我愈來愈相信每個孩子都是「資優生」,關鍵在於有沒有找到他學習的優勢管道(有可能不只一種),並加以開發運用。
「運用優勢管道」是學習的好方法之一,它的好處是容易產生成功的經驗,而它的缺點便是太過個別化,並且需要老師花費許多心思在教學的設計上,何況在團體班當中很難完全照顧到每一個「特別」的需求,慶幸的是,在特殊領域資優而語文能力在水平之下的學生畢竟是極少數,因此大多數的學生是可以透過綜合「視覺」、「聽覺」與「操作」的活動來進行有效的學習。
此外,以學習語文來說,利用小團體(約6~8人) 互動是效益最佳的學習方式,在小團體當中,每個人可以有較多的機會參與練習並得到指導,同時還可以藉由趣味的活動設計,讓學生不知不覺當中反覆練習課程內容而不覺得枯燥或疲累,要維持學生長期的學習動力與良好習慣,興趣的維持是很重要的。除非學生的資優項目很特別,不適合團體班,且本人有強烈的學習動機(如想短期通過考試之類),基本上我們推崇的是小團體的學習模式,並搭配豐富化的教學設計來達到教育的目標。不但如此,從另一個觀點而言,對個人來說,每個人的一生都應該去發掘並發展自己的「資優領域」,這不只是身為老師的使命之一,更是孩子和家長重要的任務,畢竟,每一個孩子都是某方面的資優生,關鍵在於有沒有加以啟發並好好運用!
